My philosophy on leadership is simple: To truly lead other people, you must first lead yourself.

I remember a time when an exec asked for my opinion about a major project. I was the first one to say it's a car crash and here's why. I laid out my definition for success for the project, how it had been implemented and why, if my assumptions were true, it was failing. This was a big thing as people in the past had been fired for speaking their minds. A true leader isn't defined by their job title, but by their willingness to speak up when it's right for the company.
On a different occasion, I had to be respectfully but brutally honest with another senior manager and a colleague was present. I did what I felt was right and was surprised later when she approached me telling me she'd never seen that happen before and couldn't believe I'd had the courage to do it.
When you do the right things because they're right for your colleagues and for the company, you unconsciously give others permission to speak up too. You create a powerful ripple effect of positive change. That's the true power of leadership.
